MS Exercise
Class
Goal
- To provide skills and
knowledge that will help individuals incorporate the exercises learned into
lifelong participation
- To provide socialization
and support opportunities with others with common exercise goals
- To provide programs and
offer opportunities specific to several ability levels
Staff
The MS Exercise Class was developed by a physical therapist working in conjunction
with the West County MS Center. Each class is led by a licensed physical therapist
or physical therapy assistant with training and experience working specifically
with an MS population.
Class Structure
The MS Exercise Program consists of 12 sessions, twice a week for 6 weeks. Classes
are 45 minutes in length. There is a maximum of 6 participants per class to
ensure individualized attention. Classes are grouped according to similar physical
ability levels.
Cost
The cost of the program is $120. Some insurance companies will pay the fee for
the class. If requested, the claim will be submitted to the individual's insurance
company.
Course Content
The program consists of:
- General education in
appropriate forms of exercise with respect to ability level
- Strengthening exercises
- Flexibility exercises
- Balance training
- Endurance training
- Education in exercise-related
topics relevant to MS
Referrals
A physician's prescription is required prior to beginning the class. A physical
therapy screening may also be necessary to determine appropriate class placement.
